Upcoming event: Teaching feminist theory

For this edition of the CPP seminar series we're very pleased to welcome Rose Gann, who will be giving a talk entitled 'How best to teach feminist theory? Challenges, dilemmas and politics'

This paper examines the challenges, dilemmas, and politics of teaching feminist political theory at undergraduate level in HEIs in the UK.  Drawing upon the ideas of constructive alignment (Biggs & Tang (2011),  Loughlin et al (2021)), and feminist pedagogies (hooks (1994), Disch & Hawkesworth (2016), McMahon (2018)), it argues that approaches to teaching feminist theory at undergraduate level are often problematic because of the way in which the curriculum content is typically organised and designed. This can be seen particularly clearly in the ways in which existing textbooks and much of the supporting secondary literature in this field examine and organise the content of feminist theory (eg., Bryson 2016; Tong 2018; Finlayson 2016; Beasley 1999; Whelehan 1995) as well as in openly accessible course outlines and handbooks.  The paper explores the limitations of these conventional approaches to the teaching of feminist theory and suggests that such approaches encourage a misalignment of course curriculum content from intended learning outcomes and teaching activities.
